Promontory Point

Today Brian decided to plan a surprise family outing. We drove out to the middle of nowhere and checked out Promontory Point. It was definitely fun for the kids. We got to hear a ranger tell us about what the journey to California would have been like in about 1870. We got to see the locomotive drive up the track and we saw the steam billow from below and the coal burn above. After we were done there, we drove out to Spiral Jetti. If you've never been there, you're not missing much! Actually it was about a 17 mile drive over rocks. Not just loose gravel-big rocks! I thought we'd blow a tire for sure, but we didn't. It's another 1/2 mile walk in when you have a car that won't make it over the really big rocks. On the walk you see lava rock in all sizes then you can hike all the way down to the spiral jetti as it is known which is a rock formation somebody with too much time on their hands created. It's basically as it is called-a spiral of lava rock. It goes clear out into the salt of the great Salt Lake and if you go far enough out your feet start sinking. All in all it was a fun family outing.
